Stripe vs Helcim

Stripe's standard pricing in Canada is flat rate: 2.7% + CA$0.05 in person and 2.9% + CA$0.30 online for domestic cards. Helcim uses interchange plus for all merchants: the card network's cost plus a published margin, such as 0.40% + 8¢ in person at its lowest volume tier. Both say they have no monthly fees or cancellation fees. Which costs less depends on each business's sales.

How each one prices

Stripe’s standard pricing is flat rate: one published rate per type of sale, with interchange inside it. Stripe also lists custom pricing, including “IC+ pricing”, for “businesses with large payments volume or unique business models”.

Helcim says it “provides all merchants with a billing method known as Interchange Plus pricing.” Interchange is the fee the processor pays the customer’s bank; it differs by card. Helcim adds a published margin that falls across five volume tiers, set by “a 3-month rolling processing average.”

What the statements look like

On Stripe’s flat rate, each sale shows one fee. On Helcim’s interchange plus, interchange and the margin are separate, and each card type is listed. See How to Read Your Merchant Statement.

Common questions

Which one costs less?

This page does not say, because it depends on each business. Helcim's cost changes with the card mix, because interchange differs by card. Stripe's standard rate is the same for most cards. The card fee calculator works out both with your own numbers.

Does either offer interchange plus?

Helcim says it provides all merchants with interchange plus pricing. Stripe lists 'IC+ pricing' as part of custom pricing for businesses with large payment volume, with rates not published.

How much is Interac debit?

Stripe lists CA$0.15 per transaction for Interac debit cards in person. Helcim's fee disclosure lists 9.0¢ for chip and PIN and 12.5¢ for tap at its lowest volume tier.

Are fees returned on refunds?

Stripe's support article says its processing fees from the original transaction aren't returned. Helcim's pricing page says it does not charge an added fee for refunds, but merchants are still responsible for the processing fees of the original transaction.

Can I leave either one at any time?

Stripe's services agreement says a user may terminate it at any time by closing the Stripe account. Helcim's terms say 'There are no penalties for termination or cancellation fees.' Helcim may require a reserve for at least six months after termination.
